Partnership for a Fit Pike County

Pine Mountain Trail

The Pine Mountain Trail, constructed by more than 1,000 volunteers wielding shovels, pickaxes, and Ditch Witches, will eventually stretch 110 miles, starting in Virginia at the deep gorge in Breaks Interstate Park, pushing into Kentucky through one of the Southeast’s largest stretches of contiguous wilderness, and ending in the Cumberland Gap. The trail opens up a hidden landscape of spectacular gorges, waterfalls, rhododendron tunnels and plants found nowhere else on earth.  The closest access to the Pine Mountain Trail to Pike County is a trailhead located in the Elkhorn City community.  A map of the trail is included on its website
So far, 48 miles are complete and open to the public, a section promising wildflowers, encounters with forest creatures and — where the trees clear at the tops of rocky ridges — some of the best 360-degree sunset views in Kentucky.
