Partnership for a Fit Pike County

Grant's Branch Nature Trail

39 Grant Branch Park
McVeigh, Pike County

By looking at Grant’s Branch Park’s lake, one would not know that it had its beginning as a coal mine sludge pond. After a successful reclamation by Massey Coal Company, the area was donated to Pike County. The once coal-producing mountains are now teaming with wildflowers, majestic hardwoods and plentiful wildlife. Sharing this lakeside ecosystem is a newly developed hiking trail. The Grant’s Branch Nature Trail is nearing completion. The trail length is approximately 2 miles one way, from start to finish. Partners such as: the Belfry Area Master Gardeners Group, Belfry High School Vocational Students, the U.S. Department of Forestry, Wal-Mart and TruValue Hardware Store, in conjunction with the county, have made this a reality. Trees have been identified, benches made, walking bridges spanned, picnic tables set up, all to enhance the visitor’s experience with nature. Come make your own memories.
